Do house plants eventually die if they are not repotted?

My hybrid philodendron has 2 roots hanging out of the pot but I don't want it to get much bigger. What will happen to it if I never repot it?

Eventually the roots will replace the soil, and it won't do well anymore because the pot will be packed with roots that choke each other out, in the end. If you are wanting to keep it the same size, possibly you could divide it and replant one part of it back in the same pot with fresh soil.

The roots hanging out of the pot are probably aerial roots. Philodendrons do that. You might gently tip it out of the pot and see what is going on in there, whether it is rootbound and needs repotted or not.

Then you will have an extra plant to share with someone else.
Reply:Well right now two roots is okay but in the future there will be more roots coming out and it will eventually die, you see i have a neighbour that had her plant in the same pot for 8 years and it was starting to die because there was a lack of nutrients in the soil because the whole plant sucked those nutrients out and it should absolutely have a soil change and should be repoted in a pot that is 2 inches larger than the previous one and her plant died and she wondered why and asked a horticulturist and he said it was because it wasn``t repoted and the nutrients in the soil was poor and also make sure to repot it in a potting soil that is high in nutrients and has good drainage. so if you do not repot it and change the soil it will die. It will take a couple years after it has been repoted to get alot bigger.
Reply:YOU CAN REPOT THE PLANT TO KEEP IT HEALTHY AND TRIM IT BACK SO IT LOOKS FULL, BUT DOESNT GET TOO LARGE.
