Why do you get nat like bugs in house plants, and what do you do to get rid of them.?

These are called "Fungus Gnats" and they live part of their life in the moist soil. I'd suggest you purchase some Safer's Insecticidal Soap (found at any hardware store) and spray the mixed product onto the flying gnats and then soak the soil with the solution to kill their larvae (where they breed). The soap contains a form of potassium salt that disrupts the structure and permeability of the insects' cell membranes (cuticle) and then the insect/larvae will essentially lose their fluids and dry out.

Once this is done, place about a 1/2 inch of sand over your soil. This coating of sand discourages any further breeding of the gnats in the soil because it remains relatively dry while the soil beneath is moist.

Hope this solves your problem. GOOD LUCK!

I use a mixture of dishwashing soap and water. Spray it on and watch them die. There are also many items available at your local plant store.
Reply:Not sure how you get them. But, pour some dish soap and water on them. If that doesn't work in a day or 2, pour some white vinegar on them. By some I mean about a talbespoon. Or put each solution in a spray bottle and spray it.
Reply:they are called fungal gnats. They lay there larvae in the soil where they eat composted material and plant roots.

to get rid of them spray Dipel(biological insecticide), neem(natural product, often effects insects while moulting) and put slices of potato on the top of the pots. The larvae will move into the slices and you can throw them out.
Reply:Fungus gnats need moisture to live. The best way I have ever found to get rid of them is to dry up the soil in your plants. Most plants can take getting dry one or two times. also make sure that the plants are never sitting in water. If you have trays underneath them make sure you empty them out after every watering.
Reply:I ' ve had the problem the soap didn't do the trick for me it helps but not sure exactly what bugs you have ..Safer's sticky strips work really well.. and Wilson house plant insect soil dust works well too but I wouldn't recommend the dust if you have kids or pets that might get in to plants..
