She's already killed two~ they are very delicate plants and I can't put anything in the dirt. Her litter box is always clean but I don't know why she keeps going in the plants. We also tried moving them up higher and she still managed to get up there.
How can I stop my indoor cat from urinating in the house plants?
Can you put some rocks on the soil, or would that harm your plants? I protect my houseplants by covering the soil with decorative rocks, which hides the soil from the cat so it's no longer an appealing place to go, but doesn't interfere with drainage - you can water the plants right through the rocks. They should be at least 3/4" in size to discourage the cat from digging. Another thing to try would be to cut a circle of mesh cloth or wire mesh to fit the inside of the pot, with a hole in the middle for the plant stems. Cut a slit from the outside of the circle to the hole in the middle to allow you to place the mesh circle in the pot around the plant. You'll be able to water through the mesh. And/or you could try a remote training device - there are devices with a motion detector that make a sound to frighten a cat away from the area (ssscat spray or tattle tale), or that create a physical barrier the cat dislikes (x-mat). http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/Na...
It's possible that she may have a urinary infection or crystals - it's less common in female cats than males, but it does happen (it's happened to two female cats I've had). The discomfort and feelings of urgency associated with urinary health issues can cause her to go in unusual places. Taking her to the vet for a urinary check is probably a good idea.
Are you using a pellet-textured litter, or a scented litter? Some cats don't like those. Try a clumping litter with a fine, sandy texture and no fragrance - Cat Attract is a good one. It can be found at pet supply stores. If she's been using the same plastic litterbox for several months, the plastic may have absorbed odors over time that make the litterbox unpleasant for your cat. Try replacing her box. Some cats prefer to have one box to pee %26amp; one to poop - try providing her with a second box. This link has more good info on the litter box and how to keep a cat using it. http://www.catinfo.org/litterbox.htm
Hope this helps!
Reply:Is it a male? He needs to be "fixed" first; and then also there are sprays you can buy to keep them away-ask a vet, just call(?). Pet stores and stores that have a lot of pet care like Target will have some too.
BTW having male/female cat spayed prevents cancer and a whole lot of other problems.
Reply:Spray her with water every time she does it.
Reply:Have you tried a new litter? Cats are very finicky.
Reply:Sprinkle a little pepper around the plant pot, when the cat stands on this it will be gritty, leading that cat to lick it off and it will be hot teaching the cat not to go near the pot again. I personally do not approve of this method pepper could get into the cats eyes, lemon zest works fine for me also orange, cats hate most citrus fruits, especially orange. Another one could be to put double sided sticky tape around the plant so when the cat stands on it it is sticky, a bit like the pepper one. Also the other suggestion about squirting with water is good ( Not the mist) I hope I helped. Good Luck.
Reply:I had that problem with one of my cats. I bought some netting at the fabric shop to put over the top of the plantar. She started using her catbox again. Cats don't like the netting because they can get their claws caught in it. Also it was great being able to water right through it and not have to take it off.
Reply:I had a problem with my male cat peeing on my husbands things while back and I found a spray called Feilaway from a Doctor %26amp; Smith magazine and He quit after I sprayed things with it....It has something in it to keep them away from things and also supposed to calm them down when they are upset....like going to the vet.....Hope this helps and Good Luck!
Reply:Add some of the dirt you have in the pots to her litter box. When you see her at the plants spray her with a spritzing bottle just with water. Is she spayed, that may help if she is not. if that doesn't work, and don't think I'm cruel, but put a mouse trap in the one she tends to visit most often. the snap itself may drive her away from them.
Reply:* If possible, put rocks over the dirt in the planter. Larger than pea sized should do the trick. If not, cover the planter opening around the plant with netting.
* If you have citrus scented spray cleaner or furniture polish, rub it around the outside of the planter. Most cats (not all) dislike the smell of citrus and will avoid it.
Reply:go to a vet or feeder supply place and tlel them what is happening and they can see ya some stuff to keep them from the plants. also SOME cates do not like walking on FOIL my duaghter lined ehr planters with foil and they did not like walking around on the foil ... the sound spooked em of the crinkling under their feet
